Overview

About the stadium

Estadio Agustín Tovar, affectionately known to supporters as La Carolina, is the largest football stadium in the city of Barinas in western Venezuela and the home of Zamora FC. The ground sits in the heart of the Venezuelan llanos — the vast tropical grasslands that shape the culture and identity of Barinas State.

Key facts

  • Home club: Zamora FC, one of Venezuela's most successful sides of the past decade
  • Capacity: approximately 24,234 spectators according to current figures
  • Opened: 23 June 2007 following a complete rebuild
  • Surface: natural grass

The stadium was built on the site of an older 12,000-seat venue, with the redevelopment intended to expand capacity toward 30,000. The design was the work of architect Ricardo Mazzei. Beyond club football, the ground also hosts matches of the Venezuela national team, putting Barinas firmly on the country's football map.

History

Journey through time

The stadium's modern form was created as part of Venezuela's preparations to host the 2007 Copa América, the first time the nation staged the tournament. The original venue of roughly 12,000 seats was demolished and replaced by a new arena.

From Copa América to Zamora's titles

  • 23 June 2007 – official opening of the rebuilt stadium
  • 2007 – hosted Group C matches at the Copa América, including USA vs. Paraguay (1–3)
  • 2012–2018 – the era of Zamora FC dominance

Founded only in 2002, Zamora FC turned La Carolina into a fortress. Within a few years the side nicknamed "El Blanquinegro" (the Black and White) collected five championships in the Venezuelan Primera División — in the 2012–13, 2013–14, 2015, 2016 and 2018 seasons. That haul made Zamora one of the most successful clubs of the modern era of Venezuelan football, and the Barinas stadium became a symbol of that rise.

Atmosphere

Matchday

On Zamora FC matchdays, La Carolina becomes a roaring cauldron. Fans in the club's black and white colours pack the stands and generate an atmosphere unmatched elsewhere in western Venezuela — the fiery temperament of the llanos plains carried straight into the terraces.

The heart of llanos football

Barinas is a proud llanero city, and football runs deep here. When Zamora take to the pitch, drums, trumpets and chants ring out until the final whistle. Title deciders and big matches rank among the most intense experiences in the country.

  • Best atmosphere: play-off ties and championship-deciding fixtures
  • Colours: black and white, everywhere across the stands
  • Tropical climate: evening kick-offs bring more comfortable temperatures

Matches of the national team, La Vinotinto, can sell the ground out and turn Barinas into the centre of the country's football world for a night.

Practical info

Visiting the stadium

The stadium lies right in the city of Barinas, capital of the eponymous state in western Venezuela, in the region of the sweeping llanos plains. It is easily reached from the city centre and surrounding neighbourhoods.
