The stadium's modern form was created as part of Venezuela's preparations to host the 2007 Copa América, the first time the nation staged the tournament. The original venue of roughly 12,000 seats was demolished and replaced by a new arena.

From Copa América to Zamora's titles

Founded only in 2002, Zamora FC turned La Carolina into a fortress. Within a few years the side nicknamed "El Blanquinegro" (the Black and White) collected five championships in the Venezuelan Primera División — in the 2012–13, 2013–14, 2015, 2016 and 2018 seasons. That haul made Zamora one of the most successful clubs of the modern era of Venezuelan football, and the Barinas stadium became a symbol of that rise.

On Zamora FC matchdays, La Carolina becomes a roaring cauldron. Fans in the club's black and white colours pack the stands and generate an atmosphere unmatched elsewhere in western Venezuela — the fiery temperament of the llanos plains carried straight into the terraces.

The heart of llanos football

Barinas is a proud llanero city, and football runs deep here. When Zamora take to the pitch, drums, trumpets and chants ring out until the final whistle. Title deciders and big matches rank among the most intense experiences in the country.

The stadium lies right in the city of Barinas, capital of the eponymous state in western Venezuela, in the region of the sweeping llanos plains. It is easily reached from the city centre and surrounding neighbourhoods.

• By car: Barinas sits on the main roads linking the Andean foothills with the plains
