Overview
About the stadium
Estadio Polideportivo de Pueblo Nuevo is a football stadium in San Cristóbal, the capital of the Andean state of Táchira in western Venezuela, close to the Colombian border. With a capacity of 38,755 spectators, it is the home of Deportivo Táchira, one of the country's most successful and most passionately supported clubs, and a regular host of the Venezuelan national football team.
The temple of Venezuelan football
In a nation where baseball traditionally reigns, this ground has earned the nickname "El Templo Sagrado" (The Sacred Temple) thanks to the achievements the national side has recorded here. Built in 1975 and opened in January 1976, it was extensively renovated ahead of the 2007 Copa América.
- Home club: Deportivo Táchira
- Capacity: 38,755 spectators

History
Journey through time
The stadium was built in 1975 and officially inaugurated on 11 January 1976. From the outset it became the fortress of Deportivo Táchira, founded in 1974, a club that quickly grew into one of the most decorated sides in Venezuelan football and a regular representative of the country in South American competitions.
The 2007 Copa América
The ground lived its most significant chapter when Venezuela hosted the 2007 Copa América. Following a major refurbishment, it staged four tournament matches, including a dramatic Venezuela 2–2 Bolivia draw and a Venezuela 2–0 Peru group-stage victory.
- Built: 1975, opened 1976
- Renovation: 2007 for the Copa América
- 2007 Copa América: 4 matches including a quarter-final
- Quarter-final: Uruguay 4–1 Venezuela (7 July 2007)
For the "Vinotinto", the run in San Cristóbal marked a historic tournament breakthrough that helped fuel football's rising popularity across the country.
Atmosphere
Matchday
The atmosphere at Pueblo Nuevo ranks among the most fervent in all of Venezuela. Deportivo Táchira's supporters, known as "La Barra del Aurinegro", fill the stands with a sea of yellow and black, flags and relentless singing that turns this Andean ground into a feared destination for visiting teams.
Andean passion
San Cristóbal sits in the mountains near the Colombian border, and the local football culture stands apart from the rest of baseball-obsessed Venezuela. Deportivo Táchira is the heart of regional identity, and home matches, especially against Caracas FC, are among the fiercest derbies in the country.
- Ultras: La Barra del Aurinegro
- Colours: yellow and black (aurinegro)
- Marquee fixtures: derby against Caracas FC, national-team games
- Nickname: El Templo Sagrado
When the national team plays, the united backing of the whole stadium can produce one of the loudest backdrops on the continent.
