History
Journey through time
Construction took place between 1969 and 1971, with the stadium officially opening in 1971 for the Bolivarian Games. The build cost roughly US$14.1 million and was conceived from the outset as a modern multi-purpose arena for Zulia state.
2007 Copa América and renovations
The stadium's most celebrated chapter came during the 2007 Copa América, hosted by Venezuela. It staged five matches of the tournament and served as the venue for the Grand Final, in which Brazil defeated Argentina 3–0 on 15 July 2007. Ahead of the tournament it underwent a major overhaul — two new stands were added and the cycling track surrounding the pitch was replaced with additional seating.

Further modernization in 2021–2022 kept the arena in service as one of Venezuela's key football grounds.
