Overview

About the stadium

The Estadio Polideportivo Cachamay, officially the Centro Total de Entretenimiento Cachamay, is the principal football stadium of Puerto Ordaz, a district of the industrial city of Ciudad Guayana in Bolívar State, Venezuela. With a capacity of around 41,600 seated spectators, it is regarded as one of the country's finest arenas and serves as the home of AC Mineros de Guayana, with Deportivo La Guaira also having used it in recent seasons.

A stadium framed by the Caroní

The ground sits in a striking natural setting on the south bank of the powerful Caroní river, beside the cascades and greenery of Cachamay Park, one of the best-loved leisure spots in Guayana.

  • Sport: association football
  • Home club: AC Mineros de Guayana
  • Capacity: roughly 41,600 seats
  • City: Puerto Ordaz (Ciudad Guayana), Bolívar State
  • Setting: beside the Caroní river and Cachamay Park

The enclosed, single-tier bowl gives the stadium an intimate, modern feel and made it a natural choice as a flagship venue for international football in eastern Venezuela.

History

Journey through time

Football has been played on the site since 1990, when the original ground reopened with a modest capacity of about 14,000, consisting of a main stand and a smaller stand opposite. For more than a decade it served the clubs of Guayana as a regional venue without national prominence.

Rebuilt for the 2007 Copa América

The stadium's defining moment came when Venezuela was awarded the 2007 Copa América. Between 2006 and 2007 it was extensively rebuilt, with new enclosed stands raised on three sides and the main stand reconstructed, tripling the capacity to roughly 41,600. The remodelled arena reopened on 22 June 2007.

  • Hosted Group B matches including Ecuador vs Chile and Brazil vs Mexico
  • Staged a semi-final, Mexico vs Argentina, on 11 July 2007

Since the tournament the stadium has remained the home of AC Mineros de Guayana, the city's leading club, anchoring top-flight football in the eastern region of the country and hosting both league fixtures and occasional national-team appearances.

Atmosphere

Matchday

On matchdays the Cachamay comes alive with the warm, rhythmic energy typical of Venezuelan football, where drums, brass and chanting fill the enclosed stands. The single-tier bowl keeps spectators close to the pitch, so even a modest crowd generates real noise and pressure on visiting teams.

The pride of Guayana

Football is woven into the identity of this hard-working industrial region, and the Mineros de Guayana faithful give the club its nickname-driven passion, turning home fixtures into a focal point of local life.

  • Lively support built around drums and chants
  • Intimate, close-to-the-action atmosphere
  • A genuine regional rallying point in eastern Venezuela

During the 2007 Copa América the ground hosted some of the tournament's most memorable nights, including a charged semi-final, and that big-match heritage still lends an extra sense of occasion whenever international or high-profile fixtures return to Puerto Ordaz.

Practical info

Visiting the stadium

The stadium lies in Puerto Ordaz, the modern western half of Ciudad Guayana, close to the confluence of the Caroní and Orinoco rivers in Bolívar State. Its position beside Cachamay Park makes it easy to combine a match with one of the city's signature green spaces.

Getting there and what to see

Ciudad Guayana is reached via Manuel Carlos Piar Guayana Airport and by road from across eastern Venezuela; within the city, taxis and local buses serve the stadium area.

  • Cachamay Park — waterfalls and walking paths right beside the ground
  • La Llovizna Park — spectacular Caroní cascades a short drive away
  • Arrive early on matchdays, as parking near the park can fill quickly
  • Bring sun protection and water for the tropical heat
  • Combine the game with a riverside walk before or after kick-off

The pairing of top-flight football and two of Venezuela's most scenic urban parks makes a visit to the Cachamay a rewarding day out in the heart of Guayana.
