Overview
About the stadium
Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado, universally known as "La Casa Blanca" (The White House), is the home of Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito (LDU Quito) and one of Ecuador's most distinctive football grounds. It sits in the northern part of the capital, Quito, at an altitude of roughly 2,734 metres (8,970 ft) above sea level, which makes it one of the most demanding venues in all of South America.
A White House in the Andes
With a capacity of 41,575 spectators, the arena is among the largest in the country and is dedicated almost entirely to football. The "Casa Blanca" name reflects LDU's club colours – the team plays in white, and on big nights the stands turn into a sea of white. For visiting teams from lower elevations, the thin mountain air is a genuine obstacle, sapping stamina and slowing recovery while handing the home side a lasting advantage. The blend of a modern arena, high-altitude setting and passionate support makes La Casa Blanca a symbol of football in Quito and across Ecuador.
History
Journey through time
The stadium was inaugurated on 6 March 1997, instantly becoming a source of pride for LDU Quito as the club gained its own modern home in the north of the city. Its construction marked a major step in the club's professionalisation.
A name and a golden era
The ground is named after Rodrigo Paz Delgado, the long-serving club president whose vision and determination drove the project to completion. Its truly historic moment came in 2008, when LDU Quito became the only Ecuadorian club ever to lift the Copa Libertadores, South America's premier club trophy. On the road to that title, the altitude and atmosphere of La Casa Blanca played a decisive role in home matches. The club went on to add further continental honours, including the Copa Sudamericana (2009) and the Recopa Sudamericana, establishing Quito as a leading South American football centre. Those triumphs remain the high point of the stadium's history.
Atmosphere
Matchday
On big nights, Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado turns into a deafening cauldron. LDU supporters, dressed in the club's white, fill the stands, wave flags and create one of the most striking atmospheres on the continent.
A white wall and the altitude edge
The most intense occasions are the continental nights of the Copa Libertadores, when major Brazilian and Argentine sides come to town. For them, the combination of fervent crowds and an altitude of 2,734 metres can be overwhelming – the thin air blunts opponents' tempo, and the home team thrives on it. Quito lives and breathes football, and the rivalry with the capital's other clubs charges every match with extra energy. Drums, chants and non-stop singing drive LDU forward from the first minute to the last. La Casa Blanca is more than a stadium; it is a true fortress where visitors rarely feel at ease.
