Overview

About the stadium

The Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa is a multi-sport Olympic stadium in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, and for decades served as the traditional home of the Ecuador national football team. Sitting at roughly 2,782 metres (9,127 ft) above sea level, it ranks among the highest major venues in South American football, a fact central to its reputation. Its capacity is approximately 35,258 spectators.

Olympic multi-use

Unlike purpose-built football grounds, the Atahualpa was conceived as an Olympic venue, with an athletics track ringing the pitch, allowing it to host football, track and field and other sports.

  • National team: longtime home of Ecuador's "La Tri" (1951–2020)
  • Clubs: Universidad Católica and C.D. El Nacional
  • Location: corner of Avenida 6 de Diciembre and Avenida Naciones Unidas
  • Altitude: ~2,782 m, a marked advantage over lowland visitors

History

Journey through time

Ground was broken in May 1948 and the stadium was inaugurated on 25 November 1951. It was named after Atahualpa, the last emperor of the Inca Empire, becoming a symbol of national pride.

From opening to the national team

For decades the Atahualpa was the principal stage for "La Tri" in home World Cup qualifiers. It was here, helped by the altitude, that Ecuador built its reputation as a feared opponent.

  • 1948: construction begins
  • 1951: official opening
  • 1977: capacity expansion
  • 2020: scheduled for demolition to make way for a modern arena — yet as of March 2025 this has not happened and the stadium still hosts matches

Though the national team later moved some home fixtures elsewhere, the Atahualpa remains firmly written into Ecuadorian football history as the cradle of its greatest moments.

Atmosphere

Matchday

When "La Tri" took the field, the Atahualpa turned into a sea of yellow, blue and red, giving the hosts an unmistakable energy and a tight backdrop beneath Quito's mountain sky.

The altitude advantage

The stadium's most potent weapon is the altitude of ~2,782 m itself. Visitors from lowland nations arrive unaccustomed to the thin air and often fade visibly late in matches, while the home side benefits from acclimatisation.

  • Fans: passionate support for both national team and Quito clubs
  • Atmosphere: roaring stands amplified by the elevation
  • Altitude factor: a psychological and physical edge over opponents

For many Ecuadorian supporters the Atahualpa remains a hallowed place where unforgettable qualifying nights were born.

Practical info

Visiting the stadium

The Atahualpa lies in north-central Quito at the busy intersection of Avenida 6 de Diciembre and Avenida Naciones Unidas, within reach of the city's commercial and financial core.

Visiting in practice

  • Getting there: trolleybuses and city buses run along Av. 6 de Diciembre; taxis and ride apps work reliably
  • Altitude: allow time to acclimatise — drink plenty of water, go easy on alcohol and limit exertion in the first days
  • Matchday: arrive early, as central traffic can be heavy
  • Nearby: La Carolina park, shopping malls and hotels in the modern northern district

With its central position and links to major avenues, the Atahualpa is among the easiest stadiums to reach in Quito for both locals and visitors.
