Overview

About the stadium

The Estadio George Capwell is the home ground of Club Sport Emelec, one of Ecuador's most successful and storied football clubs, set in the heart of the port city of Guayaquil. Unlike many modern arenas pushed to the suburbs, the Capwell sits in the dense, central Centenario district, woven directly into the surrounding city blocks. After a sweeping reconstruction completed in the 2010s, the all-seater stadium holds a capacity of 40,020 spectators.

A central Guayaquil landmark

The ground belongs to the club itself, a rarity in South American football, where most teams play in municipal stadiums. Named after George Capwell, the American engineer who founded Emelec, the arena combines steep, enclosing stands with a compact footprint that traps noise and concentrates atmosphere. Emelec play their home matches here, including continental fixtures in the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana.

History

Journey through time

The story of the Capwell is inseparable from the man who gives it his name. George Capwell, an American-born engineer, travelled to Ecuador to manage his electricity company, Empresa Eléctrica del Ecuador, and went on to found Club Sport Emelec in 1929. He drove the construction of the club's own stadium, a project begun in September 1940.

From baseball to football fortress

The first stone was laid on 24 June 1943, and the ground was inaugurated on 21 October 1945 with, fittingly for its multi-sport origins, a baseball game watched by 11,000 fans. Football followed weeks later on 2 December 1945. The stadium hosted matches during the 1947 Copa América and was repeatedly upgraded through the decades, with major renovations in 1991, 1999 and 2006.

  • Founded by: George Capwell
  • Opened: 1945

The most dramatic transformation came in the 2010s, when a complete modern rebuild — its expansion completed in December 2016 — turned the old ground into a tightly enclosed, fully seated arena.

Atmosphere

Matchday

Few grounds in Ecuador generate the electric, claustrophobic noise of the Capwell on a big night. The steep, close stands press right up to the pitch, and the blue-clad Emelec faithful turn the bowl into a wall of sound that gives the home side a fierce edge.

Bombillos and the Clásico del Astillero

Emelec are nicknamed "el Bombillo" (the lightbulb), a nod to George Capwell's electricity company, and their supporters fill the terraces in electric blue and white. The stadium reaches its peak for the Clásico del Astillero, the city derby against Barcelona Sporting Club, one of the most passionate rivalries in South American football. Named after Guayaquil's historic shipyard quarter, the fixture splits the city in two.

  • Nickname: el Bombillo
  • Colours: blue and white
  • Derby: Clásico del Astillero vs Barcelona SC

On these nights the compact Capwell, with no running track between fans and players, delivers an intensity that visiting teams rarely enjoy.

Practical info

Visiting the stadium

The Estadio George Capwell sits in the Centenario district of central Guayaquil, just south of the city centre, making it one of the most accessible grounds in the country. Its urban setting means it is woven into everyday streets rather than isolated on the outskirts.

Getting there and matchday tips

The stadium is bordered by General Gómez Street, San Martín, Avenida Quito and Montúfar Street, placing it within easy reach of downtown Guayaquil.

  • By Metrovía: Guayaquil's bus rapid transit system runs nearby; the Centenario area is well served
  • By taxi: Quick and inexpensive from the Malecón 2000 and city centre
  • On foot: Walkable from much of central Guayaquil
  • Tickets: Buy in advance for the Clásico del Astillero, which sells out
  • Nearby: The riverfront Malecón 2000, Las Peñas neighbourhood and Cerro Santa Ana are short trips away

Arrive early for big matches, as the surrounding streets fill quickly with blue-shirted supporters.
