Overview

About the stadium

The Gelora Delta Stadium (Stadion Gelora Delta Sidoarjo) is a multi-purpose football ground in Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia, set within the wider Greater Surabaya metropolitan area. Opened in 2000 to host the 15th Indonesian National Sports Week (PON XV), it quickly became the spiritual home of Deltras Sidoarjo, the club affectionately nicknamed "The Lobster" by its devoted local following. The pitch is natural grass and the venue has long served as one of East Java's principal regional football arenas.

A regional football landmark

For more than two decades the stadium held a capacity of roughly 35,000, but a major 2024 renovation reduced seating to about 19,400 in exchange for improved safety and comfort. Beyond Deltras, it hosts smaller local sides such as Persida Sidoarjo and Putra Delta Sidoarjo. Key facts:

  • Location: Sidoarjo, East Java, near Surabaya
  • Opened: 2000 (for PON XV)
  • Capacity: ~19,400 (after 2024 renovation)
  • Surface: natural grass
  • Primary tenant: Deltras Sidoarjo

History

Journey through time

The Gelora Delta Stadium was conceived as the centrepiece of the 2000 Pekan Olahraga Nasional (PON XV), the national multi-sport games staged in East Java. Built to a modern standard for its era, it gave the booming Sidoarjo Regency a venue worthy of regional and national competition, and a small PON museum was later installed in front of the complex to commemorate those games.

From PON to professional football

Once the games concluded, the stadium became the home of Deltras Sidoarjo and a regular stop on the Indonesian football calendar. Over the years it has staged significant fixtures, underlining its national role.

  • 2006: hosted the Piala Indonesia final
  • 2013 & 2018: AFF youth championships (U-19, U-18, U-16)
  • 2014: Liga Indonesia Premier Division semifinals and final
  • 2024: renovated, capacity cut from ~35,000 to ~19,400
  • 2026: ASEAN U-17 Boys' Championship matches

Indonesia's senior national team has also played friendlies here, recording wins over Pakistan, Malaysia and Cambodia.

Atmosphere

Matchday

On a Deltras matchday the Gelora Delta comes alive with the colour and noise of East Java football. The home supporters, who proudly call their team "The Lobster," fill the stands with drums, banners and relentless chanting that rolls around the bowl from kickoff to final whistle. Sidoarjo sits in the shadow of nearby Surabaya, one of Indonesia's most football-mad cities, and the regional rivalry only sharpens the intensity.

The pulse of Sidoarjo

The close, steep-sided seating keeps crowd energy concentrated and amplifies every chant. The atmosphere is at its most electric for derbies and promotion deciders.

  • Nickname culture: fans rally behind "The Lobster"
  • Soundtrack: drums, flares of colour and continuous singing
  • Best for atmosphere: local derbies and play-off nights
  • Tip: arrive early, as kickoff queues build quickly

Youth international tournaments have also drawn lively, family-friendly crowds, showcasing the venue's broad appeal across generations of supporters.

Practical info

Visiting the stadium

Reaching the Gelora Delta Stadium is straightforward thanks to Sidoarjo's position within the Greater Surabaya conurbation. The town lies just south of Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city, making the venue accessible to a huge regional population by road and rail.

Getting there

Most visitors travel from Surabaya, around 25 km to the north. The journey is short by car, ride-hailing app or commuter train to Sidoarjo station, from where the stadium is a brief local ride.

  • By air: Juanda International Airport (SUB) is the nearest hub, only a short drive away
  • By train: commuter services link Surabaya to Sidoarjo station
  • By road: easily reached via the Surabaya–Sidoarjo toll corridor

Match tickets are typically sold at the ground and through club channels. Local warung food stalls around the stadium offer East Javanese snacks before kickoff, adding to the matchday experience.
