Overview

About the stadium

The Riau Main Stadium (Stadion Utama Riau) is the largest sporting venue in Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau province on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. With a capacity of 43,923 spectators, it ranks among the biggest football stadiums in the country and dominates the eastern edge of the city as a symbol of its sporting ambitions.

A modern arena on Sumatra

The arena was built as the flagship venue of the 2012 National Games (Pekan Olahraga Nasional, PON), hosted by Riau. It staged both the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games and served as the centrepiece of the entire event.

  • Capacity: 43,923 spectators
  • Main sport: football (multi-purpose use)
  • Location: Pekanbaru, Riau province, Sumatra
  • Home club: PSPS Riau

Its large capacity and modern design make it one of the most striking stadiums on Sumatra. Yet, like many venues built for a single major event, it has since raised questions about sustainable everyday use beyond the great sporting occasions.

History

Journey through time

The stadium's history is tightly bound to Riau province's preparations for the 2012 National Games (PON XVIII), one of the largest sporting events in Indonesia. Construction began in October 2009 and the arena was completed in 2012, just in time for the opening of the Games.

Built for the 2012 PON

The project was meant to give Pekanbaru and the wider province a flagship facility capable of hosting an event of national importance. The stadium staged both the opening and closing ceremonies of the PON and became the visual and organisational axis of the Games.

  • Construction started: October 2009
  • Completed: 2012
  • Key event: PON XVIII 2012
  • International matches: AFC U-22 qualification (July 2012)

Shortly after the Games it also hosted qualifying matches for the AFC U-22 Asian Cup. As with many venues built for one-off events, however, discussion gradually turned to its long-term use and upkeep.

Atmosphere

Matchday

On big occasions the Riau Main Stadium can offer an impressive backdrop — tens of thousands of spectators in the stands bring out its scale and modern silhouette. The high point came with the 2012 PON ceremonies, when the arena came alive with colour, music and the sporting pride of the whole province.

A grand arena seeking purpose

Football matches of the local club PSPS Riau bring it regular life, even though attendances at ordinary games fall well short of the full capacity. The wide gap between the stands and the pitch is a reminder that the stadium was conceived for grand occasions rather than intimate club atmosphere.

  • Atmospheric peak: opening and closing of the 2012 PON
  • Regular life: PSPS Riau matches
  • Character: spacious multi-purpose arena

Even so, it remains the region's most prominent sporting venue and the place Pekanbaru turns to whenever it wants to host something truly large.

Practical info

Visiting the stadium

The Riau Main Stadium sits on the eastern edge of Pekanbaru, within a large sports complex built for the 2012 PON. It lies several kilometres from the city centre, so travelling by car or taxi is the most convenient option.

Getting there

Pekanbaru is reachable by air via Sultan Syarif Kasim II International Airport, from which the stadium is a short drive along the city's roads.

  • Car/taxi: the easiest choice, with ample parking on site
  • By air: Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport (Pekanbaru)
  • Public transport: local minibuses (angkot) and ride-hailing apps
  • Tip: prepare for Sumatra's tropical, humid climate

Before visiting, it is worth checking the current PSPS Riau fixture list in advance, as outside major events the stadium is not open to the public on a daily basis.
