Overview

About the stadium

Estadio Hernán Ramírez Villegas is the principal football stadium of Pereira, a city at the heart of Colombia's coffee region (Eje Cafetero), and the home ground of Deportivo Pereira. With a capacity of roughly 30,297, it is one of the most important sporting venues in the Risaralda department and has served professional football and athletics for decades.

The ground at a glance

  • Club: Deportivo Pereira (since 1971)
  • City: Pereira, Risaralda department, Colombian coffee region
  • Capacity: approximately 30,297
  • Playing surface: natural grass, 105 × 70 m

The stadium is named after architect Hernán Ramírez Villegas, who helped design it, and forms part of the Villa Olímpica sports complex. Set in a city that is a commercial and cultural crossroads of the Andean coffee belt, it stands as a symbol of regional pride and is one of the few Colombian arenas where football is played at around 1,400 metres above sea level, under a mild and humid climate.

History

Journey through time

The stadium was built in 1971 and inaugurated on 1 May of that year. It was originally known as Villa Olímpica de Pereira, after the sports complex it still belongs to, before the city council renamed it in honour of architect Hernán Ramírez Villegas. Structural engineer Guillermo González Zuleta also contributed to its design.

From rebuild to title

  • 2011: a major reconstruction costing about $17.2 million ahead of the FIFA U-20 World Cup
  • 7 December 2022: Deportivo Pereira won the first league title in its history here

The high point of the ground's history came in the 2022 season, when Deportivo Pereira went through the final group and championship stages unbeaten. At home they beat Junior 4–3, Millonarios 2–1 and Santa Fe 5–1, then overcame Independiente Medellín in the decisive final. The triumph on home turf made Hernán Ramírez Villegas the stage for the greatest moment in Pereira football.

Atmosphere

Matchday

When Deportivo Pereira play at home, the Hernán Ramírez Villegas becomes the noisy heart of the coffee region. The club's supporters, proudly nicknamed "matecaña" after the city's old name, fill the stands with drumbeats, yellow-and-red banners and chants that echo across the Andean valley.

Coffee-region football

  • Colours: the yellow, red and green of Deportivo Pereira
  • Peak: late 2022, when the home fortress carried the club to the title

In the Eje Cafetero, football is woven into regional identity as tightly as coffee itself. Matches against rivals from Caldas and Quindío, or against the big clubs of Bogotá and Medellín, light up the arena from the opening minutes. After the historic triumph of 2022, the stadium's atmosphere grew even more intense — locals feel that it was here, on their own pitch, that the moment Pereira had awaited for decades was finally born.
