Overview

About the stadium

The Estadio Deportivo Cali, also known as the Estadio de Palmaseca and nicknamed the "Coloso de Rozo," is a football stadium in the Valle del Cauca department of Colombia. It is the home of Deportivo Cali and represents one of the great rarities of Colombian football: it is owned by the club itself rather than by a city or municipality. Most Colombian clubs play in municipal grounds, which makes Palmaseca a notable exception.

A club-owned ground seating 42,000

The stadium sits in the Palmaseca area near the town of Palmira, roughly twenty minutes from Cali and right next to Alfonso Bonilla Aragón International Airport. Following renovations and the installation of seats before the 2018 season, it holds around 42,000 spectators, although the admitted crowd is sometimes capped for safety and evacuation reasons. Set in the lowlands of the Cauca Valley, it lies at a far lower altitude than Bogotá's stadiums, favouring fast, technical football. For Deportivo Cali, the ground stands as a symbol of independence and a long-pursued sporting identity.

History

Journey through time

The dream of building its own ground accompanied Deportivo Cali for decades. The club had traditionally shared the municipal Estadio Pascual Guerrero with its rival América de Cali, and securing a stadium of its own became one of the boldest projects in its history.

A long road to opening in 2010

Construction stretched across many years, hampered by financing and unexpected obstacles. The build had to be halted and shifted by roughly 250 metres after the remains of a Pre-Columbian indigenous culture were discovered on the site. Designed by architect José Vicente Viteri, the project finally reached completion, and the stadium opened in 2010. Its originally generous capacity (reported at up to around 61,890) evolved over time, falling to roughly 42,000 seats after renovations and the installation of seating. Completing the ground was a historic milestone for Deportivo Cali, making it one of the very few Colombian clubs to play home matches on land it actually owns.

Atmosphere

Matchday

The atmosphere at Palmaseca is steeped in the green colours and pride of Deportivo Cali's supporters. The club is nicknamed the "azucareros" (sugar growers), a nod to the sugar cane of the fertile Cauca Valley, and its fans form one of the most passionate followings in Colombian football.

Green passion and the derby against América

Cali is a football city, and the highlight of every season is the Clásico Vallecaucano, the city derby against América de Cali. It is among the fiercest fixtures in the country and takes on extra meaning at Palmaseca, since it is played on the home soil of one of the rivals. Green-clad stands, drums, flags and chants create a cauldron that drives the home side forward. Thanks to the low-lying location and the warm climate of the valley, the football is brisk and attacking, and on big nights the stadium becomes one of the loudest grounds in Colombia.

Practical info

Visiting the stadium

The stadium lies in the Palmaseca area of Palmira, outside the city of Cali itself and right beside the international airport. Plan to travel by car or taxi, as public transport here is less frequent than into the city centres.

Practical matchday tips

  • Location: Palmaseca, Palmira (Valle del Cauca), roughly 20–25 minutes' drive from central Cali.
  • Getting there: A car, taxi or ride-share is easiest; arrive early to allow for traffic and security checks.
  • Airport: The ground sits next to Alfonso Bonilla Aragón International Airport, making it convenient for visiting fans.
  • Tickets: Buy ahead for the derby and big matches, as capacity is sometimes capped for safety.
  • Nearby: The immediate area is rural; look to Cali or Palmira for dining, hotels and entertainment.
  • Climate: The valley is warm and low-lying, so bring light clothing and water.
