Overview
About the stadium
Estadio Nemesio Camacho, universally known as El Campín, is the principal football stadium of Bogotá, the capital of Colombia. Set almost in the heart of the city at a high altitude of roughly 2,550 metres above sea level, it ranks among South America's loftiest major football arenas. With a capacity of about 39,512 spectators, it is shared by two of the country's most storied clubs.
Home of two rivals
El Campín is the shared home of Bogotá's two giants: Millonarios FC, who play in blue, and Independiente Santa Fe, who wear red. Both are founding members of Colombian professional football, and their meetings form the celebrated Bogotá derby.
- Location: central Bogotá, Teusaquillo district
- Capacity: approximately 39,512 seats
- Sport: association football
- Clubs: Millonarios FC and Independiente Santa Fe
The stadium also regularly hosts the Colombia national team and remains an inseparable part of the capital's sporting identity.
History
Journey through time
El Campín was inaugurated on 10 August 1938 and quickly became the focal point of football in Bogotá. Its official name, Estadio Nemesio Camacho, honours Nemesio Camacho, a former manager of the city's streetcar system and father of Luis Camacho Matiz, who offered the land for construction. The nickname "Campín" derives from the English word camping, as the site had previously been a camping ground.
From founding to world tournaments
Millonarios FC has played here since the 1938 opening, while Independiente Santa Fe moved in during 1952. Over the decades the ground has undergone several refurbishments and modernisations.
- 1938: official opening
- 2001: Copa América final (Colombia beat Mexico 1–0)
- 2011: FIFA U-20 World Cup matches and closing ceremony
- 2024: FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup final
Beyond club football, the stadium has repeatedly welcomed major international tournaments staged in Colombia.
Atmosphere
Matchday
The atmosphere at El Campín reaches its peak during the Bogotá derby between Millonarios and Santa Fe, one of the oldest and most passionate rivalries in Colombian football. The stands split into a blue Millonarios end and a red Santa Fe end, with both sets of supporters filling the bowl with drums, chants and colourful choreographies.
Football in the capital's heart
The high altitude lends matches here a distinctive intensity, and the home sides draw strength from it. The noisy, colourful environment turns El Campín into a genuine capital-city fortress.
- Derby: Millonarios (blue) vs Santa Fe (red)
- Atmosphere: drums, chants, tifos
- Concerts: the ground hosts major music events and world-class performers
Beyond football, El Campín regularly transforms into a concert arena that has welcomed many international artists, making it one of Bogotá's most important cultural venues.
Practical info
Visiting the stadium
El Campín sits in the Teusaquillo district almost in central Bogotá, making it easy to reach from most of the city. Thanks to its central position it is surrounded by a sports and recreation complex, including an adjacent arena and park.
Getting there
The most convenient option is the TransMilenio rapid bus network, whose stations (such as Campín / Estadio on the Avenida Caracas corridor) lie within walking distance.
- Transport: TransMilenio stations right by the stadium
- On matchday: arrive early, as derbies bring security checks and crowds
- Clothing: expect cooler evenings due to the altitude and bring layers
- Nearby: Parque Simón Bolívar, the neighbouring indoor arena and central restaurants
It is wise to buy tickets in advance, especially for sell-out derbies, and to avoid wearing the rival club's colours in the corresponding sector.
