Overview
About the stadium
Estadio Jaraguay, long known as the Estadio Municipal de Montería, is the principal football ground of the Caribbean city of Montería in the Córdoba department of northern Colombia. It is the home of Jaguares de Córdoba, the club that carries the city's colours in Colombia's top division, and a social focal point for a region steeped in the football culture of the Sinú river valley.
A ground on the Sinú
The stadium holds roughly 12,000 spectators and sits in a lowland city shaped by the broad Sinú river. Its playing surface measures 105 × 68 metres of grass, meeting the standards of professional Colombian football.
Key facts:
- Club: Jaguares de Córdoba
- Capacity: approximately 12,000
- City: Montería, Córdoba department
- Region: the Caribbean lowlands of Colombia
Owned by the municipality of Montería, the ground hosts league fixtures alongside regional sporting and cultural events. For supporters across the department it is a natural gathering place, where a festive matchday spirit blends with the tropical climate of Colombia's coastal plains.
History
Journey through time
The stadium was built in 2012 for Colombia's National Games, opening with an initial capacity of around 8,000. From the outset it was conceived as a modern, multi-purpose venue intended to give Montería a ground worthy of the city's growing ambitions.
From the Games to Colombia's top flight
In December 2015 the venue was given the name Jaraguay through a public citizens' contest, honouring a Zenú cacique (chief) who once ruled in the area of present-day Montería. Before that it was known simply as the Estadio Municipal de Montería; it is also nicknamed the Monumental del Sinú.
A decisive moment came in 2017, when a new eastern grandstand (the Tribuna Oriental) added around 4,000 seats and lifted capacity to today's figure of roughly 12,000. The expansion arrived as Jaguares de Córdoba established themselves among Colombia's elite and the ground needed to meet top-flight requirements. That steady growth mirrors the club's own journey — from a regional project to a regular presence in the Categoría Primera A.
Atmosphere
Matchday
When Jaguares play at home, Jaraguay becomes a loud cauldron under the Caribbean sun. Supporters from Montería and across Córdoba bring the colourful, danceable energy typical of coastal Colombia, where football is interwoven with rhythm and heat.
Sweltering lowlands and feline pride
Montería lies in the lowlands beside the Sinú river and is marked by high temperatures and humidity all year round. For visiting sides the tropical heat can be as testing an opponent as Jaguares de Córdoba themselves, whose "jaguars" nickname lends the home crowd a predatory edge.
The matchday mood is shaped by:
- the heat and humidity of the Caribbean lowlands, an advantage for acclimatised hosts
- drums and vallenato, the musical signature of the coastal region
- a festive, family atmosphere typical of Colombia's coastal cities
Clashes against the big clubs of the interior draw the loudest crowds, when lowland energy and terrace pressure combine into one of the most authentic backdrops in Colombian football.
