Overview
About the stadium
The Sree Kanteerava Stadium is a multi-purpose arena in the heart of Bengaluru, the capital of the Indian state of Karnataka. Built on the bed of the former Sampangi Lake, it serves both athletics and football, and is best known today as the fortress of Bengaluru FC, one of the most successful clubs in the Indian Super League. The India national football team has also used the ground as a home venue since 2014.
A central landmark
With a seating capacity of around 25,810, the stadium is compact by international standards but punches well above its weight in atmosphere. Its location in central Bengaluru, close to Cubbon Park and the city's commercial core, makes it one of the most accessible sporting venues in southern India.
- Home of Bengaluru FC since 2014
- Hosts the India national football team
- Features an eight-lane 400-metre synthetic athletics track
- Field-event areas, a volleyball court and outdoor rock-climbing walls
- Owned by the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, Government of Karnataka
History
Journey through time
The stadium's story begins in 1946, when it opened as the Sampangi Stadium with a simple cinder track. It was inaugurated by Maharaja Jayachamaraja Wadiyar and later renamed after Yuvaraja Kanteerava Narasimharaja Wadiyar, a member of the Mysore royal lineage, anchoring the venue firmly in Karnataka's heritage.
From cinder track to football fortress
A major redevelopment in the 1990s laid a modern synthetic track at a cost of around ₹220 million, with works completed on 31 May 1997 ahead of the National Games of India. For decades the stadium was primarily an athletics venue.
- Built 1946 as Sampangi Stadium
- Synthetic track completed 1997
- Became a football home in 2014
The modern era arrived when Bengaluru FC moved in for the 2014 season. The club rose rapidly, winning the I-League in its debut campaign and later the Indian Super League title, turning a quiet athletics ground into one of Indian football's most celebrated homes.
Atmosphere
Matchday
On a Bengaluru FC matchday, the Sree Kanteerava Stadium transforms into a wall of blue noise. The club's supporters' group, the West Block Blues, occupy the stand behind one goal, leading chants, unfurling banners and sustaining a level of organised passion rarely seen in Indian football.
The West Block Blues
The West Block Blues helped pioneer a genuine terrace culture in India, importing the rituals of European ultras while building something distinctly local. Their drumming and choreographed tifo displays give the compact bowl an intensity that feels far larger than its 25,810 capacity.
- Continuous singing led by the West Block Blues
- Tifos, flags and drums behind the goal
- A flagship venue for the growth of Indian football
Although average attendances have hovered around 8,000 in recent seasons, the noise and colour of the core support have made the stadium a symbol of how passionately football can be embraced in a traditionally cricket-loving nation.
Practical info
Visiting the stadium
The Sree Kanteerava Stadium sits in central Bengaluru, making it one of the easiest major sporting venues in India to reach. It lies close to Cubbon Park and the bustling Mahatma Gandhi Road district, surrounded by hotels, restaurants and shops.
Getting there and matchday tips
The most convenient way to arrive is by the Namma Metro: the nearest station is Cubbon Park on the Purple Line, a short walk from the ground. Auto-rickshaws and ride-hailing apps are abundant across the city centre.
- Metro: Cubbon Park station (Purple Line), then walk
- Best for: Bengaluru FC matches and athletics meets
- Arrive early to soak up the West Block Blues pre-match atmosphere
- Explore Cubbon Park and MG Road nearby before kick-off
- Carry water and light clothing — Bengaluru's evenings are mild but matches draw crowds
Because the venue is so central, traffic can be heavy on matchdays, so the metro is strongly recommended over driving.
