History
Journey through time
Nehru Stadium opened in 1971 and was conceived from the start as a generous multi-purpose sporting venue. The original plan envisaged a capacity of up to 45,000 seats, but this enlarged design was never completed, leaving the arena today with around 30,000 places on single-tiered terraces.
Matches that made history
The structure was designed by structural engineer M. Abdul Jabbar. Over the decades the stadium has hosted a series of major domestic tournaments, among them Santosh Trophy matches (1978 and 1992) and the Federation Cup (1979 and 1991). In 1978 it also staged an international fixture between an Indian side and a Russian team.
- 1971: the stadium opens
- 2008: major renovation focused on training facilities
- 2017–2018: Chennai City FC invested roughly 3 crore rupees in a new pitch, dressing rooms and other facilities
Chennai City FC used the stadium as its home ground in the I-League until 2022.
Atmosphere
Matchday
On match days for the I-League and domestic cups, Nehru Stadium comes alive with a vocal backdrop created by football supporters from Coimbatore and the wider Tamil Nadu region. The atmosphere carries a distinctive southern Indian flavour, blending a passion for football with the area's traditional sporting culture.
The energy of the Tamil Nadu stands
The single-tiered terraces wrap around both the playing field and the athletics track, so spectators follow the action from a fairly open vantage point. Floodlights allow evening fixtures, which tend to draw a particularly lively crowd.
- Best experience: evening I-League matches under the floodlights
- Crowd: local football fans and the wider sporting community
- Character: open terraces with a running track around the pitch
Thanks to its mix of athletics, football and other sports, the ground keeps a busy, many-sided sporting atmosphere through much of the year.
