Overview
About the stadium
The Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium is a multi-purpose sports venue in the very heart of Hyderabad, the capital of the Indian state of Telangana. With a capacity of around 30,000 spectators, it is used chiefly for cricket and association football, though its grounds hold far more than a single pitch. It sits centrally in the city, between Nizam College and the Public Gardens, making it one of the most accessible sporting venues in Hyderabad.
A multi-purpose hub
Today the complex is more than stands and turf: it also houses a swimming pool, an indoor stadium and a shopping complex. The venue is owned and operated by the Sports Authority of Telangana State (SATS), and its principal tenant is the football club Fateh Hyderabad FC.
Its practical strengths include:
- a central location reachable from across the city,
- floodlights, installed in 1993,
- multi-sport facilities under one roof.
A ground rich in history yet busy with everyday use, it remains one of the enduring symbols of sport in Hyderabad.
History
Journey through time
The history of this site runs surprisingly deep, all the way back to 1687, when Mughal soldiers camped on the vast open ground here. After their victory, the plain was named Fateh Maidan, meaning "Victory Square." During the Asaf Jahi era the space was used as polo grounds.
From Fateh Maidan to a modern stadium
The cricket venue was formally established in 1950, and as early as November 1955 it hosted its first Test match, against New Zealand. In 1967 the stadium was renamed in memory of Lal Bahadur Shastri, the former Prime Minister of India, who had died shortly before.
Key milestones:
- 1687 – the ground named Fateh Maidan,
- 1950 – the cricket venue established,
- 1955 – first Test match (against New Zealand),
- 1967 – renamed after Lal Bahadur Shastri,
- 1993 – floodlights installed during a Hero Cup match.
Over the years the stadium has staged three Test matches and fourteen One Day Internationals (ODIs), earning a lasting place in the story of Indian cricket.
Atmosphere
Matchday
The stadium's atmosphere is shaped by its rare blend of long history and lively city bustle. Standing right in central Hyderabad, the action inside merges with the pulse of a teeming metropolis, as spectators arrive on foot from nearby colleges, offices and parks.
A place of memory and pulse
It was the floodlights, switched on in 1993 during a Hero Cup match between the West Indies and Zimbabwe, that opened the ground to evening fixtures and a certain magic with them. For decades it served as the beating heart of cricket and football in the city.
What makes the atmosphere distinctive:
- the historic aura of a place once called "Victory Square,"
- a living connection to surrounding parks and colleges,
- evening matches under the lights,
- a varied mix of sports and events in a single complex.
Thanks to all this, the stadium keeps the feel of a traditional yet still vibrant venue at the centre of a great city.
Practical info
Visiting the stadium
The stadium's greatest asset is its central location — it stands right in the heart of Hyderabad, between Nizam College and the Public Gardens, near the police control room. That makes it remarkably easy to reach from most parts of the city.
Getting there
Its downtown setting means numerous bus routes, taxis and ride-hailing apps serve the area, while the nearby parks and educational institutions act as simple landmarks.
Practical tips:
- navigate by the Public Gardens and Nizam College,
- use city public transport or a taxi into the centre,
- expect busy traffic in the city core,
- the complex also offers a swimming pool and a shopping centre.
The stadium is owned and run by the Sports Authority of Telangana State (SATS), so it is worth checking the schedule of matches and events in advance against current activity in the city.
