Overview
About the stadium
Guru Nanak Stadium is a multi-purpose sports venue in Ludhiana, in the Indian state of Punjab, named after Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. With a capacity of around 30,000 spectators, it ranks among the region's largest sporting arenas and is used chiefly for football and athletics, alongside a wide range of other events.
The heart of sport in Ludhiana
The stadium serves as one of the home grounds of Punjab FC, a club competing in the Indian Super League (ISL), and is also used by its youth setup. The playing surface is grass (Bermuda grass), and the complex features an eight-lane synthetic running track with a two-lane warm-up track. Facilities include changing rooms, meeting rooms, stands and a scoreboard. An adjacent indoor stadium hosts events such as the National Basketball Championship. This blend of facilities makes Guru Nanak Stadium more a sporting complex than a football-only ground, drawing competitions and training camps from across Punjab throughout the year.
History
Journey through time
The stadium is named after Guru Nanak (1469–1539), the first Sikh guru, whose legacy is woven through Punjabi life; the naming links modern sport with the spiritual and cultural identity of the region. For decades it has functioned as Ludhiana's principal multi-purpose sporting ground.
From national games to professional football
Among its proudest moments was hosting the 31st National Games in 2001, when the venue staged top-tier nationwide competition. The stadium has also hosted international kabaddi matches, including World Cup fixtures featuring teams such as India, Pakistan, Canada and England. In the past, Minerva Academy FC and JCT FC played home matches here; today it is used by Punjab FC. A renovation completed in 2025 modernised the facilities and reaffirmed the stadium's role as a cornerstone sporting address of the city.
Atmosphere
Matchday
The atmosphere at Guru Nanak Stadium reflects Punjab's deep passion for sport — a region famed for athletics, wrestling, kabaddi and a fast-growing love of football. On ISL matchdays and during local tournaments, the stands fill with nearby fans for whom sport is part of everyday life.
The Punjabi sporting spirit
Ludhiana is an industrial and sporting hub, and the stadium often becomes the beating heart of community events, from football to athletics meets to kabaddi, deeply rooted in Punjabi culture. Its broad range of uses means the energy of professional football mingles with the enthusiasm of amateur competitions and school contests. Being named after Guru Nanak adds a cultural resonance that visitors feel as part of the regional identity. The result is a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere typical of India's great multi-purpose venues.
