Overview

About the stadium

The G. M. C. Balayogi Athletic Stadium, widely known as Gachibowli Stadium, is a multi-sport venue in the Gachibowli suburb of Hyderabad, in the Indian state of Telangana. Built primarily for athletics and football, it is the centrepiece of a larger sports complex and has long served as one of southern India's principal arenas for track-and-field and association football.

A multi-sport home in Gachibowli

The stadium holds approximately 18,000 spectators and is owned and operated by the Sports Authority of Telangana State. Its infield is wrapped by an eight-lane 400 m synthetic running track, a 10-lane 100 m sprinting straight and a dedicated warm-up track, making it a genuine athletics facility as well as a football ground.

  • Home of Hyderabad FC in the Indian Super League (ISL) from 2019 to 2025
  • Later used by Sreenidi Deccan FC and the Telangana state football team
  • Part of the wider Gachibowli sports complex serving the whole city

Its blend of high-level athletics and top-tier Indian football gives the ground a distinctive dual identity within Hyderabad's sporting landscape.

History

Journey through time

The stadium was constructed around 2001 and opened in 2003, built by the government of N. Chandrababu Naidu as part of a sports complex created to stage a major international event. It was conceived from the outset as a modern athletics-and-football arena to put Hyderabad on the map of Indian and Asian sport.

Named after a Speaker of the Lok Sabha

The venue is named in honour of Ganti Mohana Chandra Balayogi, who served as Speaker of the Lok Sabha, India's lower house of parliament, and died in a helicopter crash. Naming the stadium after him gave the complex a lasting civic significance.

  • Hosted the 2003 Afro-Asian Games, whose opening ceremony drew more than 30,000 people
  • In 2010 around 2,800 Kuchipudi dancers performed here to set a Guinness World Record
  • Became a regular Indian Super League venue once Hyderabad FC moved in for the 2019 season

From continental multi-sport games to professional league football, the ground has hosted a remarkable range of events across more than two decades.

Atmosphere

Matchday

On match nights the Gachibowli Stadium becomes a focal point for football in Hyderabad, a city far better known for cricket yet increasingly drawn to the Indian Super League. The athletics-style bowl, with its running track separating fans from the pitch, gives a wide, open feel that fills with colour and noise when Hyderabad FC are at home.

Football fever in the City of Pearls

Supporters of Hyderabad FC helped build one of the ISL's most passionate young fan cultures, celebrating the club's 2021–22 league title and turning the ground into a vibrant home base. The crowd reflects Hyderabad itself — a cosmopolitan metropolis of more than ten million people, famed for its tech industry, biryani and Charminar heritage.

  • Chanting, drums and team colours bring energy to ISL fixtures
  • A growing, family-friendly football audience in a traditional cricket stronghold
  • The wider complex hosts athletics meets and community sport year-round

The result is a lively, modern Indian football atmosphere set against the backdrop of one of the country's great cities.
