Overview

About the stadium

Estádio Major Antônio Couto Pereira, commonly shortened to Couto Pereira, is a football stadium in Curitiba, capital of the Brazilian state of Paraná, and the home ground of Coritiba Foot Ball Club, one of Brazil's oldest clubs, founded in 1909. Set in the Alto da Glória district, it holds 40,502 spectators.

Heart of the green-and-white

Opened in 1932, the stadium is one of southern Brazil's most traditional football venues. Coritiba plays its Campeonato Paranaense and national fixtures here.

  • Home club: Coritiba Foot Ball Club (nicknamed "Coxa")
  • Capacity: 40,502 spectators
  • Opened: 20 November 1932
  • City: Curitiba, Paraná state

Couto Pereira hosts the celebrated Atletiba city derby against arch-rivals Athletico Paranaense and ranks among the region's best-attended terraces. For supporters it is a living symbol of more than a century of club history.

History

Journey through time

The stadium was inaugurated on 20 November 1932, when Coritiba beat América 4–2, with the first goal scored by a player named Gildo. It was originally called Estádio Belford Duarte.

From Belford Duarte to Couto Pereira

In 1942 floodlights were inaugurated in a match where Coritiba defeated Avaí 4–2. On 28 February 1977 the ground was renamed to honour former club president Major Antônio Couto Pereira.

  • 1932: stadium opens
  • 1942: floodlights installed
  • 1977: renamed Couto Pereira
  • 1985: Coritiba wins the Brazilian Championship, commemorated in the Trophy Walkway
  • 2005 and 2014: major renovations (drainage, new turf, pitch expanded to 109 × 72 m)

The 1985 title remains the club's greatest achievement, and Couto Pereira stands as its enduring symbol.

Atmosphere

Matchday

The atmosphere at Couto Pereira is unmistakably fervent. Coritiba's supporters, proudly known as "Coxa", fill the stands in green and white and create one of the loudest backdrops in southern Brazil.

Passion in the colours of Atletiba

The season's high point is the Atletiba city derby against Athletico Paranaense — one of the oldest and most intense rivalries in Brazilian football.

  • Colours: green and white
  • Supporters' nickname: Coxa
  • Attendance record: 80,000 (Coritiba v São Paulo, 1998)
  • Derby: Atletiba against Athletico Paranaense

The record crowd of 80,000 in 1998 underlines the strength of this fan movement. On derby days the stadium boils over with chants, flags and smoke, delivering one of the most authentic experiences Brazilian football has to offer.
