Overview

About the stadium

The DY Patil Stadium in Nerul, Navi Mumbai, is one of India's most modern multi-purpose arenas. Owned by the D. Y. Patil group and run by its sports academy, it seats 45,300 spectators, making it one of the ten largest cricket grounds in the country. The venue is built primarily for cricket — it served as a home of the Mumbai Indians during the Indian Premier League (IPL) — but it also hosts football, concerts and major public events.

The arena's identity

Designed by architect Hafeez Contractor, the stadium uses column-free cantilever gull-wing roofs, so not a single pillar blocks the view from any of the 45,300 bucket seats. It includes a 120-seat media centre and 60 corporate boxes. Thanks to powerful floodlights, the ground stages unforgettable night matches under lights, whether it's a cricket clash, a football tournament or a global music star.

History

Journey through time

The stadium was inaugurated on 4 March 2008 and instantly became a flagship of Indian cricket. In its very first season it hosted the final of the inaugural IPL in 2008, and two years later the 2010 IPL final — etching its name into the history of the world's most-watched cricket league.

From cricket to football and concerts

Beyond cricket, the arena has grown into a major football venue: it hosted matches at the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup, the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, the 2022 AFC Women's Asian Cup and the 2023–24 AFC Champions League. Since March 2023 it has also staged the Women's Premier League. The ground is equally renowned as a concert venue — performers have included Justin Bieber (2017), U2, Dua Lipa, Katy Perry (2019) and Coldplay (January 2025). In 2013 it even set a Guinness World Record.

Atmosphere

Matchday

When the floodlights come on, the DY Patil Stadium crackles with a special energy. During IPL matches tens of thousands of vocal fans fill the bowl, and the modern acoustics combined with the column-free gull-wing roof make it feel as if every seat hangs right over the pitch.

A bowl full of sound

Evening cricket battles, football tournaments and concerts by global stars turn the arena into one of the loudest places in Navi Mumbai. The 45,300 spectators sing, clap and drum; the bowl shudders at every six and every goal. It is precisely the blend of a tropical night, the floodlights and the tight, intimate geometry of the stands that makes the atmosphere here unforgettable — whether you come for cricket, football or Coldplay.
