Overview
About the stadium
Arena Pernambuco (known during its sponsorship as Itaipava Arena Pernambuco, officially Estádio Governador Carlos Wilson Campos) is a modern football stadium serving the Greater Recife metropolitan area in north-eastern Brazil. With a capacity of 45,440, it ranks among the arenas purpose-built for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and has been the region's flagship sporting venue since it opened on 22 May 2013.
Gateway to the Cidade da Copa
The stadium does not sit in Recife itself but in the neighbouring municipality of São Lourenço da Mata, where it was meant to anchor a sweeping new development called the Cidade da Copa ("World Cup City") — a planned district of housing, retail, a university and a transport hub. The arena was therefore conceived as a catalyst for urbanising a thinly populated area. A cost of around R$500 million made it one of the world's most expensive football stadiums on completion. The complex also includes a 1 MW solar power plant, ranking it among Brazil's most environmentally advanced grounds.
History
Journey through time
Construction ran from 2010 to 2013 under the contractor Odebrecht, and the arena was finished in time for the World Cup's dress rehearsal.
From Confederations Cup to the Olympics
As early as the summer of 2013 the stadium hosted three matches of the FIFA Confederations Cup. A year later it became one of the venues of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, staging five matches, including the round-of-16 tie between Costa Rica and Greece, dramatically decided on penalties. In 2016 the arena joined the football tournament of the Summer Olympics in Rio. Its principal tenant was the club Náutico Capibaribe, which played here from 2013 to 2018. Once the major tournaments ended, the familiar legacy problems surfaced: the surrounding Cidade da Copa project remained largely unbuilt and usage fell short of expectations — a common fate among Brazil's World Cup arenas.
Atmosphere
Matchday
Arena Pernambuco is a showcase of contemporary stadium architecture: a compact single continuous tier, a light membrane roof shading the stands, and the clean, open lines typical of Brazil's class of 2014 grounds.
An experience away from the centre
Unlike Brazil's historic inner-city stadiums, the arena stands in São Lourenço da Mata, well away from bustling central Recife. That gives a visit its own character — the approach runs through open country and the sight of the glowing bowl is striking. At Náutico fixtures and national-team games, Pernambuco's crowd can generate a loud, warm atmosphere blending drums, chants and the colours of north-eastern Brazil. Modern facilities, broad sightlines and clear views from every seat make it a comfortable venue, although the out-of-town location means the atmosphere ignites mainly for the biggest occasions.
Practical info
Visiting the stadium
The arena lies in the town of São Lourenço da Mata within Greater Recife, roughly 19 km from central Recife. Allow plenty of travel time, as this is a suburban location.
Getting there
- By car from Recife: via the BR‑408 / PE‑05 highways towards São Lourenço da Mata; parking is available around the complex.
- By rail/metro: the nearest Metrô do Recife suburban line (Camaragibe branch) with connecting shuttles on match days.
- By bus: special services from central Recife are usually laid on for major fixtures.
- Tip: set off early — access roads fill up before kick-off.
- Weather: Recife is tropical; expect heat and humidity, so bring water and sun protection.
- Check the current schedule, as post-World Cup usage of the stadium varies.
