Overview

About the stadium

Deep in the Amazon rainforest, in the heart of the million-strong city of Manaus, stands one of world football's boldest buildings. Arena da Amazônia holds 42,924 spectators and has been among Brazil's most photographed venues since it opened in 2014. It is used by clubs from Manaus, including Nacional FC and Amazonas FC, and occasionally hosts the Brazilian national team.

A basket woven from steel

The design by German practice gmp Architekten (Gerkan, Marg und Partner) draws on local craft tradition — the façade and roof evoke the straw baskets woven by the region's people for centuries. Bands of steel cross and interlace so that the whole structure reads like a giant piece of weaving. The stadium cost around R$605 million and was built between 2010 and 2014. Its location deep in Amazonia makes it a symbol of both ambition and controversy: a world-class arena thousands of kilometres from the coastal metropolises.

History

Journey through time

Arena da Amazônia rose on the site of the former Vivaldão stadium and was, from the outset, one of the most closely watched projects of the 2014 World Cup. It opened on 9 March 2014, just weeks before the tournament began.

Four matches and big questions

During the World Cup the arena hosted four matches, the very first — England 1–2 Italy on 14 June — being among the most-watched group-stage games. It was followed by Cameroon–Croatia, USA–Portugal and Honduras–Switzerland. Construction cost roughly R$605 million, financed largely by the Brazilian Development Bank, and three workers died during the build. After the tournament a debate flared over the "white elephant" — an expensive stadium in a region without a major top-flight club, struggling to find meaningful use. Local critics argued the money could have gone to healthcare and education. The arena thus remains a symbol of grand ambition and its price.

Atmosphere

Matchday

Football in Manaus has a rhythm all its own — the humidity, the heat and the passion of Brazil's north, played out under a tropical sky thousands of kilometres from the south of the country.

Under the Amazon sun

Visitors quickly understand why players speak of stifling heat and high humidity: temperatures stay high even in the evening and the air is heavy. For home clubs like Nacional FC and Amazonas FC it is an advantage; opponents from cooler regions wrestle with the climate as much as with the ball. The atmosphere on derby and cup nights is loud and colourful, with fans bringing the energy of an Amazonian carnival. Yet the stadium is not only for football — its modern roof and large capacity make it a concert and cultural stage too. Guns N' Roses have played here and major evangelical events have been held, so the arena comes alive beyond matchdays.

Practical info

Visiting the stadium

Arena da Amazônia sits right inside Manaus, capital of Amazonas state, and is easy to reach from the city centre and the international airport.

Practical tips

  • Location: the Flores district of Manaus, close to the centre; the neighbouring Sambadrome is a useful landmark.
  • Getting there: Manaus has Eduardo Gomes International Airport; a taxi or ride-hailing app is the simplest way to the arena, and city buses run too.
  • Climate: expect heat and high humidity year-round — drink plenty of water, and bring light clothing and sunscreen.
  • Nearby: Manaus's historic centre with the famous Teatro Amazonas opera house, the Rio Negro waterfront, and trips to the Meeting of the Waters (Encontro das Águas).
  • Tip: combine a match with a rainforest excursion — Manaus is the gateway to the Amazon.
