Alejandro Villanueva Stadium

The stadium was built between 1969 and 1974 and opened on 27 December 1974, designed by the Uruguayan engineer Walter Lavalleja with an original capacity close to 37,000. It replaced earlier Alianza homes and gave the club a permanent fortress in the district it had long called its own.

Named for a legend

In 2000 the ground was renamed to honour Alejandro Villanueva, remembered as one of the greatest players in Alianza Lima's history and an icon of early Peruvian football. The name binds the modern stadium to the club's heritage.

Matute is also a place of remembrance. In December 1987, an air disaster claimed the lives of nearly the entire Alianza Lima squad, a tragedy that scarred Peruvian football. The stadium hosted a wake for the recovered victims, and a charity match in their memory drew a record crowd. That loss remains central to the club's identity, commemorated by supporters every year. In 2024 Alianza announced ambitious redevelopment plans aiming to lift capacity beyond 47,000.

Matute has earned its nickname La Caldera, "the Boiler", for the heat and noise its supporters generate. The steep, close stands trap sound and push it back onto the pitch, and on big nights the wall of blue and white behind the goals creates one of the fiercest environments in Peruvian football.

The Lima clasico

The defining fixture is the clasico against Universitario de Deportes, the rivalry that splits the capital and has been contested at Matute since 1975. When the two meet here the atmosphere is electric and unrelenting, sustained by drums, banners and continuous singing from the barra.

The annual remembrance of the 1987 squad adds a layer of solemnity, and supporters honour the lost players with tributes that the whole ground shares.

Matute lies in the La Victoria district of central Lima, close to the historic core but in a densely built, lively part of the city. It is easy to reach from the centre, though on matchdays the surrounding streets fill quickly.

Getting there and matchday tips

The stadium is well served by Lima's bus corridors and is a short ride from downtown; many fans arrive on foot from nearby neighbourhoods. Because La Victoria can be busy and uneven, plan your route in advance.

• Wear neutral or home colours and avoid rival colours on derby days

For a first visit, a daytime league fixture is a gentler introduction than a packed evening clasico.
